MacPhee-Bagging in 2020, Covid Style

A CHANCE TO SUPPORT OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL: There are a total of 22 hills in Colonsay and Oronsay that exceed 300 feet in height, and a "MacPhee Bagger" attempts to climb them all in one connected walk, starting and finishing the enterprise from below the tideline at High Water Springs. One can choose one's own route, but whatever way you go it amounts to about 21 miles and involves quite a lot of reasonably difficult terrain. There will be a sponsored MacPhee-Bagging attempt in May 2020, in aid of the Educational Travel Fund for the 7 students at Kilchattan Primary School, here in Colonsay. We have modified the rules to suit the coronavirus. As one can imagine, any sort of school expedition from Colonsay involves ferry fares, overnight accommodation, meals etc., so a simple trip to a museum or swimming pool is a major undertaking. Please support us - read on for details!

THE COVID MODIFICATION: For this one year, participants must not attempt the challenge in one day. Instead, the MacPhees are to be bagged in four segments, over four weeks, starting on Sunday May 3rd. Participants must go "solo", whether as individuals or family units and social distancing is to be strictly observed. Participants can go on any day in a given week, and at any time, but must start and finish each segment below HWS, and must tackle the correct segment in the correct week (see details at foot of page). The terrain is rough, and you will be alone, so participants must ensure that somebody knows when they left and arrange to report back when they return. Mobile signals do not cover the entire island, so radios are available on request (contact Chris Nisbet). Participants are freely choosing exercise their "right to roam" and do so entirely at their own risk; no landowner, tenant or other individual has any responsibility in the matter.

IS IT DIFFICULT? See an account by a previous MacPhee-Bagger: Doing the MacPhies by John Spencer

HOW TO SUPPORT THIS PLOY: If you live in Colonsay and are up for the challenge, let Gavin or Kevin know and we will add your name to the list of Participants. To fully enjoy the virtual experience, follow the "live" commentary by Gavin Clark on FaceBook (gavin.clark.5492).

If you do not live in Colonsay, please sponsor one of the Participants - send a message to byrne[AT]colonsay.org.uk saying who you are sponsoring, and for how much per peak. Each participant can have as many sponsors as desired. At the end of May, we will give you the Sort Code and Account number so that you can pay by online banking (no cash, Covid rules!). Or by PayPal if preferred. If your participant does the lot, you will have pledged 21 times the "amount per peak". The most we have ever raised was £2,000 in 2010.... can we beat it in 2020? We aimed for £2019, to commemorate the 19 in Covid-19. We needed 96 sponsors at £1 per peak, and your response has outstripped our imagination. TOTAL PLEDGED so far seems to be £2706.00 ... thank you all, this is brilliant, and we hope that the children will, before too long, be able to go on educational trips once again!

HOW IS IT GOING: Week 1 started on Sunday 3rd and at least 18 individuals were noticed on various peaks. It transpires that everyone completed the course (although four left it a bit late and had to go round in very misty conditions). Week 2 was blessed with fine weather and further success - it is now Sunday 17th, the start of Week 3 and the wet, miserable conditions are not inspiring. However, people saw the forecast and in view of the young children involved, yesterday afternoon saw some serious activity. Everybody seems to be enjoying the challenge and, as ever, we wish you were here.

There is one gate in each segment, so bring a glove or a rag so that you can open and close it without touching. In each week choose any day and any time to start, make sure you are on a beach and below High Water Springs and then visit all the relevant peaks, listed below, and then return to a point below HWS. Colonsay has an excellent Primary School and the children's horizons are enhanced by expeditions of an educational nature. Over the years, the School Council has raised thousands of pounds to assist such travel - we are most grateful for your support. All such expeditions have to start from Colonsay and therefore there are very significant additional costs involved.
