BYRNE & WALSH families, South Wexford

(Kevin Nicholas Byrne, Colonsay, Argyll)

The Byrne part of this family originates with the Byrne families buried at Taghmon, resident at Ballylibernagh, Newtown, Grasscur and Doonooney (Adamstown); they are said to have come from Bonagrew (Brittas Bay). All available information on that connection is at Byrne Families of South Wexford

Note: Although not directly relevant to this site, the owner happens to be a publisher and readers may be interested in Clan O'Byrne of Leinster, a succinct and highly readable introduction to our common history. Volume 2 of The Byrnes and the O'Byrnes by Daniel Rothwell-Byrne includes a detailed chapter upon "my" branch of the Byrnes of Wexford. A site dedicated to the entire 4 volume study will be found at www.byrnehistory.com This note for information only, the volumes are freely available through major copyright libraries.
The Byrne DNA project is at Clan O'Byrne site

My grandfather, Nicholas Byrne, married into the Walsh family at Ballymacar in 1896. The Walsh family had been there since Edward Walsh of Tinnislatty married into it in 1804, when he married Mary Darcy. Mary had inherited the tenancy because her brother had been killed after the Battle of Ross in a final skirmish at Bosheen an t'Slanaigh (his remains, with that of many others, was thrown into a former quarry, now an overgrown ditch on the roadside opposite the entrance to The Red House). The origins of the Darcy family are obscure - but they were living within close proximity to Mount Corbet (nowadays Talbot Hall). Hyacinth D'Arcy's wife (Frances O'Brien) was very close to her sister - who had married John Talbot, brother of the Earl of Shrewsbury. The D'Arcy family had been banished to Galway in Cromwell's time, and it seems that they were glad of an opportunity to return - could it be that "my" Darcy was a cousin or other connection to Hyacinth, and thus gained a tenancy on the Talbot estates? Against this, the rebels at Mount Corbet were said to have made rather free with "Mr. Murphy's whiskey"... so who was Mr. Murphy? He must have had a lot of whiskey to satisfy such a multitude, so perhaps he was not connected with Mount Corbet but happened to be a distiller whose warehouse had been looted. I would be grateful if anybody could let me know if Mount Corbet and Ballymacar were indeed part of the Talbot / Shrewsbury estate. Details of the Darcy family connection.

INFORMATION PLEASE
Nicholas (O')Byrne was my g/father, through Patrick Joseph Byrne (Byrne Gen IV and Walsh Gen. VI). Information on other living descendants has been omitted, but I am happy to add links or email addresses on request. Just give me your contact detail and indicate the individual with whom you wish it to be associated.

For myself, I would like to hear from any relation who chances upon this page, and will be delighted to exchange information with other researchers.

Family tradition suggests links with Byrne families at Ballylibernagh, Doonooney (Adamstown) and Bonagrew (Brittas Bay). All available information on that connection is at Byrne Families of South Wexford. I have some slight information on another Byrne family of Ballymacar, with which we are linked by the O'Hanlon Walsh family of Knocktartan.
